I firmly believe that as women we should feel empowered by our bodies, instead of feeling as though they are an obstacle to our well-being.
My Story
Hi! I’m Krista Chernoff, a former ICU nurse, now Family Nurse Practitioner and Certified Fertility Education and Medical Management (FEMM) Teacher. I firmly believe that as women we should feel empowered by our bodies, instead of feeling as though they are an obstacle to our well-being.
My passion was not always women’s health.
If you would have talked to me about my career dreams during my first year of nursing in the ICU, I would have never thought about or mentioned women’s health. My mindset started to change, however, when I attended a talk on women’s hormones by Dr. Laurie Heap in 2016 and I was astounded to learn that our hormones affect how we feel, think, and act, and in turn are affected by things such as stress, diet, medications, and everyday products we use. Why was I never taught this? How could I make my hormones my friend instead of my worst enemy? I craved to learn more, so I became involved with “Thrive” women’s health and well-being program and helped educate women.
Questions started forming that I couldn’t shake…
As I attended graduate school to become a nurse practitioner, I was bothered by the fact that women’s health and fertility issues were brushed over. Woman after woman in clinic presented with a variety of issues, and many times the solution was hormonal contraceptives. It was like a one size fits all solution with limited alternative options. Women were not being educated on the potential side effects or long-term effects of being on the pill. While these hormonal suppressants temporarily fix symptoms, I couldn’t help but wonder what happened when a woman decided to go off birth control? What was the solution for women who did not want to go on birth control in the first place? Why are we as medical professionals simply putting a band-aid on these issues instead of trying to get to the root of the issues?
I realized we, as women, have been operating in a huge information gap.
It became evident that women, including myself, have not received the education we deserve about our bodies, cycles, and hormones, and how these all play an integral role in our overall health and well-being. We have been operating in a huge information gap that affects how we approach our health and our ability to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally. I decided to look for an alternative solution for women.
Then I discovered FEMM.
FEMM is a comprehensive women’s health program aimed at teaching women the link between their hormones and health, and how to monitor these observable hormonal signs through charting their monthly cycles. After years in the medical field, I finally found a solution that women needed to fill in the information gap! I decided to become a certified FEMM teacher and trained in medical protocols to treat women’s health problems at the FEMM Medical Management Conference in NYC. As a FEMM teacher, I am now able to educate women on their monthly cycles and hormones, and help them to meet their health and fertility goals.
FEMM has given me a deeper understanding of my cycle and hormones, a natural way to monitor my fertility, and inspired me to take charge of my health in a way I was not able to before.
I hope to do the same for you, too. Every woman deserves the tools to live their healthiest, happiest, fullest life.
